In 1879, a phantom funeral was reported which included the sound of “distant singing and the steps of a great number of persons”. However, there was no visual phenomena as the procession seemed to edge to the gates of the Bethesda Chapel. Later that night, the wife of the witness died. Her funeral took place along the route mentioned to her final resting place at the graveyard of Bethesda Chapel.

A White Lady who enjoyed luring people into drowning in the waters supposedly haunted this pool (pictured above). Her trick was to charm unsuspecting travellers by way of her beauty; leading them into the pool then watch them struggle, froth and eventually sink beneath the dark waters.

In the 1700’s, on one of the lonely mountains that surround Merthyr Tydfil, a traveller named Hugh told of how he encountered a silent, “sinister” man accompanying him as he made his way home. The stranger filled him with dread and “robbed him of the power of speech”. It was then that he noticed that the stranger had hooves!

 

Needless to say he hurried home just that little bit quicker.
